GLASGOW- Global Airlines marked a significant achievement with its inaugural Airbus A380 flight from Glasgow Airport (GLA) to New York JFK on May 15, 2025. Spearheaded by founder James Asquith, the airline aspires to revolutionize transatlantic travel with an enhanced onboard experience.
This initial flight signifies the start of Global Airlines’ vision to revive the “Golden Age of Travel,” pledging exceptional service and comfort on the world’s largest passenger aircraft. Yet, hurdles remain in a fiercely competitive market.
Global Airlines launched its first flight on May 15, 2025, deploying an Airbus A380, the largest passenger jet globally, that departed from Glasgow Airport (GLA) en route to New York JFK (JFK).
The enterprise, established by 36-year-old British entrepreneur James Asquith, aims to transform air travel between the UK and the US. Asquith, who also runs the online platform Holiday Swap, envisions a renaissance of opulent flying, concentrating on outstanding service and passenger comfort.
He asserts that Global Airlines will deliver “the best experience in the sky,” tackling common issues like lengthy security lines, inadequate customer service, and unsatisfactory in-flight meals.

Passengers were also able to enjoy the novelty of economy seating on the upper deck, boasting 76 of the 428 economy seats located there.
Despite a promising beginning, skepticism looms over Global Airlines. The transatlantic market is highly competitive, with established airlines like British Airways citing reduced demand for US holiday flights.
Moreover, the airline’s current operations are confined to four charter flights, which can be booked via a Slough-based travel agent, Travelopedia. Conversely, Global Airlines’ early flights are fixed-duration charters, and the airline plans to transition operations to London Gatwick for future scheduled services, moving away from Glasgow and Manchester, where its next flight is set for May 21, 2025.
Aerospace experts have raised doubts regarding the sustainability of Global Airlines’ model. While the A380 is appreciated by passengers for its spaciousness, it is expensive to maintain, particularly as an older aircraft.
A senior aviation insider remarked that the low pricing of pre-owned A380s mirrors their market value, frequently reduced to spare parts. This insider hinted that the charter flights may serve as a showcase for investors instead of being a profit-generating endeavor, given the soaring operational costs and absence of scheduled service permits.
Aircraft and Operations
Global Airlines currently operates two Airbus A380s. The active aircraft, 9H-GLOBL, is 12 years old and formerly served with China Southern. The second A380, a 16-year-old model previously held by Singapore Airlines, is currently stored in Lourdes, France.
The seating arrangement of the operational A380 differs from that of British Airways’ A380, featuring fewer First and Business seats but a greater economy capacity. This configuration caters to a larger passenger demographic, yet it excludes the “Gamer Class” cabin previously proposed, which was intended to provide a gaming experience between Business and Premium Economy pricing.
The flight, designated HFM380, is scheduled to arrive at New York JFK at 1:00 PM EDT. Nonetheless, the onboard experience does not align with contemporary expectations: there is no Wi-Fi, and in-flight entertainment relies on passengers’ personal devices instead of seatback screens.
Despite these limitations, Global Airlines promotes the appeal of the A380, banking on passengers’ willingness to pay a premium for the expansive double-decker jet.
