Akasa Air Expands Fleet with 29th Aircraft

Akasa Air has made a notable expansion to its fleet by adding a new Boeing 737 MAX 8-200 aircraft. The aircraft has successfully arrived in Bengaluru, marking the 29th aircraft in the company’s history within just 33 months of operations. Looking ahead, Akasa Air has plans to acquire an additional 197 aircraft in the coming years, although delivery delays from Boeing have affected this ambitious expansion timeline.

Akasa Air announced on Monday that their 29th aircraft, the Boeing 737 MAX 8-200 with registration number VT-YBG, has arrived at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. This expansion occurs just 33 months into Akasa Air’s journey. The aircraft’s delivery flight began in Seattle, USA, continued to Keflavik, Iceland, and reached its final destination from Kuwait to Bengaluru, India.

“This latest addition to our fleet supports our growth strategy and highlights our long-term commitment to enhancing services in the Indian skies,” stated the airline in their announcement.

Previously, Akasa Air set a record by rapidly achieving a fleet size of 20 aircraft within its first year. With 197 more aircraft expected for delivery over the next eight years, the airline is aiming substantial growth.

In April, reports indicated that the airline was targeting a fleet size of 30 aircraft by July, reflecting the budget carrier’s determination to expand despite facing challenges from prolonged aircraft delivery delays.

Challenges in Delivery

Aircraft deliveries for Akasa have faced delays due to heightened regulatory scrutiny of Boeing’s 737 program after an incident involving a mid-air cabin panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX last year. Out of the 446 MAX jets ordered by Indian airlines, only approximately 65 have been delivered to date. Boeing intends to increase deliveries to two aircraft monthly, but these delays have resulted in grounding some Akasa pilots. Currently, 18% of the airline’s operations consist of international flights.
