MIAMI- A significant weather event at Miami International Airport (MIA) has led to major operational disruptions, compelling British Airways (BA) to reroute its A380-operated flight to Orlando International Airport (MCO).
The flight, known as Flight BA209, was traveling from London Heathrow (LHR) and circled over Freeport, Grand Bahama, for nearly an hour before diverting due to a ground stop imposed by the FAA, as reported by AIRLIVE.
British Airways Flight BA209, operated by the Airbus A380 registered G-XLEA, departed London Heathrow (LHR) at 10:00 AM BST. This transatlantic flight was scheduled to last around 9 hours and 35 minutes but was disrupted by severe thunderstorms over South Florida.
The FAA issued advisories indicating that heavy weather conditions reduced visibility at MIA to just one mile, leading to a ground stop affecting all inbound aircraft.
Initially, the aircraft was held in a holding pattern above Freeport, Grand Bahama, but after an extended delay in the air, it was directed to Orlando International Airport (MCO).
As reported by FlightAware, by 20:20 GMT, there were at least 368 delayed flights and 20 cancellations at Miami International Airport attributed to the adverse weather conditions. The ground stop severely impacted both inbound and outbound flights, causing significant disruptions across the network.
The diverted British Airways aircraft is not the only one affected; multiple airlines had to either delay landings or divert to alternate airports in the southeastern United States.
Flight Delays and Operational Impact at MIA
British Airways’ return flight, BA206 from MIA to LHR, is also expected to encounter delays due to the diversion and subsequent scheduling issues. The airline has yet to confirm whether the aircraft will continue its journey to Miami or head directly to London once the weather conditions improve.
