Delta Detroit to Tokyo Flight with A350 Diverted to Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES- Delta Air Lines (DL) flight from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Tokyo Haneda (HND) was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on May 28, 2025, due to technical complications with one of the engines.

The Atlanta-based airline operates daily flights connecting Detroit and Tokyo, utilizing the Airbus A350 aircraft.

Delta Air Lines Incident

The long-haul service, designated DL275, landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) following an in-flight issue concerning the aircraft’s anti-ice system, as reported by Aviation Herald.

The aircraft, with registration N508DN, was at cruising altitude of FL380 approximately 620 nautical miles southwest of Anchorage (ANC) when the flight crew decided to reroute to LAX. The issue was associated with the anti-ice systems of the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

While en route from Detroit (DTW) to Tokyo (HND) on its scheduled trans-Pacific route, the crew faced a technical issue.

The problem communicated to passengers involved critical anti-ice systems necessary for high-altitude operations, especially in colder air spaces.

Instead of continuing over the Pacific, the pilots opted to divert to Los Angeles (LAX), which serves as a major Delta hub equipped with maintenance facilities.

The aircraft safely touched down on Runway 06R approximately 5.5 hours after the diversion was announced, with no injuries reported.

Following the safe landing, Delta Air Lines (DL) canceled the remainder of the flight, rebooking affected passengers on alternative flights to their final destination of Tokyo Haneda (HND).

The aircraft remained grounded at Los Angeles for about 18.5 hours before returning to operational status.
