ABU DHABI— An Etihad Airways (EY) flight destined for Hyderabad (HYD) was compelled to return to Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) due to urgent safety checks. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s return occurred in light of concerns raised by a recent report regarding an Air India (AI) crash in Ahmedabad (AMD), which heightened global scrutiny over fuel switch operations.
This precautionary action by Etihad Airways was instigated by a preliminary investigation into the tragic AI171 incident on June 12, indicating that both fuel switches had unexpectedly moved to the “cut-off” position shortly after takeoff, causing a loss of engine power.
The Etihad Airways Boeing 787 was instructed to return shortly after its departure as a safety measure.
The situation unfolded soon after Indian investigators released initial findings on the Air India AI171 crash, which tragically claimed 270 lives, including 52 British nationals. The report raised critical issues surrounding the fuel management systems onboard the Dreamliner.
Etihad Airways affirmed that the return flight was necessary for an immediate inspection of the aircraft’s fuel switches. A spokesperson for the company stated that Etihad strictly adheres to all safety protocols established by the manufacturers and regulatory bodies.
This decision signifies the growing global vigilance regarding Boeing 787 fuel systems, prompting airlines to reassess their operational risks post-crash. Although the Etihad flight did not show any malfunction, the airline’s choice reflects a commitment to the highest safety standards.
Air India Crash Investigation
The report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) unveiled that both fuel switches on the Air India Dreamliner unexpectedly transitioned to “cut-off” immediately after takeoff, leading to a significant reduction in engine thrust.
While the investigation has yet to assign blame to any pilots or equipment, cockpit voice recordings indicate that one pilot denied having switched the fuel off when queried by another.
Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, remarked that the inquiry is still active and insisted there were no technical issues detected throughout the fleet during regular inspections. Wilson confirmed that the aircraft involved went through all typical pre-flight checks, including pilot health screenings and breathalyzer tests.
Although the AAIB refrained from suggesting any recommendations for Boeing or engine manufacturers, it emphasized the mysterious nature of the fuel switch movements.
In the meantime, the FAA has communicated to international regulators that there are currently no safety concerns regarding the Boeing 787’s fuel systems.
Impact on Airlines and Aviation Safety
The incident involving Etihad highlights how a single crash report can prompt immediate caution across the aviation industry, especially when the cause remains unclear.
The integrity of fuel switches, typically used in emergencies to cut off fuel, is now under intensive scrutiny, given concerns about potential human or mechanical interference.
Etihad’s response illustrates a wider industry pledge to proactive risk management. Other international airlines operating the Boeing 787 are reported to be undertaking rigorous internal checks, although no similar incidents have surfaced.
As investigations progress, aviation regulators and airlines worldwide are anticipated to closely monitor developments, particularly regarding findings that might affect aircraft design, maintenance practices, or cockpit protocols.
