Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s status in the aviation sector, attributing it to various initiatives such as the UDAN scheme. The government has plans to expand the number of airports to over 350 by the year 2047. Minister Naidu highlighted the rapid increase in air traffic and welcomed global airlines to invest, aiming to position India as a future hub for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and grow the aviation industry to a valuation of $10 billion.

Aviation Growth
During a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India has achieved remarkable growth in the aviation sector, highlighting the significant increase in passenger numbers and impactful policies such as the UDAN scheme. He reiterated that the nation is investing in top-notch airport facilities to cater to the soaring demand for air travel. Indian airlines have placed orders for over 2,000 aircraft, marking just the initial steps in this expansion.

At the International Air Transport Association (IATA) summit, Modi announced, “Our airlines are experiencing double-digit growth. The success of the UDAN scheme marks a pivotal moment for Indian civil aviation.” He projected that by 2030, this initiative will have benefitted approximately 500 million Indians.

Reflecting on the transformations from the past four decades, he remarked, “Today’s India embodies self-confidence and inclusive development. The level of innovation and technological advancement is extraordinary.”

Modi expressed optimism that discussions at the IATA summit would offer a fresh perspective for the global aviation sector and positioned India as a leading force in the future of air travel.

Outlining essential elements of India’s aviation strength, Modi noted:

  • India represents a vast market driven by rising aspirations.
  • Domestic innovators are bringing breakthroughs in clean energy.
  • The nation’s talented workforce and youthful population are propelling technological advancement.
  • Significant changes have taken place in civil aviation recently.

Modi further noted, “Humanity is now exploring space travel, signaling the magnitude of innovation around us—India is not merely participating but leading in various fields.”

Future Plans for India’s Aviation Sector

India has announced plans to construct 50 additional airports in the next five years, with a goal of exceeding 350 airports by 2047 as part of the Viksit Bharat initiative, according to Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu at the IATA Global Aviation Summit 2025.

Naidu reported that domestic air traffic has surged by 30%, while international passenger numbers rose from 55 million to 72 million. In April 2025 alone, domestic traffic grew by 10%, surpassing the global average of 8%.

He extended an invitation to global airlines, stating, “This is a clear opportunity for international players to engage in India’s rapidly expanding regional air market. Let us travel to India, fly within India, and partner with India.”

Naidu also highlighted India’s potential as a future global hub for MRO services, targeting a $4 billion share of the worldwide MRO market by 2031. In support of this vision, the government has facilitated Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through the automatic route and established transparent, royalty-free land allocations for MRO operations.

Looking ahead, Naidu projected that India’s aviation sector could evolve into a $10 billion industry over the next 10 to 15 years, propelled by domestic manufacturing of aircraft components, electronic systems, and avionics.

He showcased two critical assembly lines—the C295 military transport aircraft and the H130 and H125 helicopters—as indicators of the ‘Make in India’ initiative in aerospace.
