GURUGRAM— India’s largest low-cost carrier, IndiGo Airlines (6E), is reportedly on the verge of converting its purchase rights for 40 additional Airbus A350 aircraft into firm orders, as reported by The Economic Times. These long-range widebody jets are anticipated to bolster IndiGo’s expanding ambitions in international long-haul operations based out of its primary hub at Delhi (DEL).
Being the largest airline in India by market share, IndiGo initially ordered 30 Airbus A350-900s and subsequently confirmed an additional 30 in June 2024, raising its total to 60. The possible introduction of 40 more A350s would elevate IndiGo’s future widebody fleet to a total of 100 aircraft.
Airbus executive Benoit de Saint-Exupéry affirmed IndiGo’s intention to acquire more widebody aircraft, highlighting that the airline’s initial purchase rights reflected strategic foresight.
“Considering the growth dynamics of the Indian aviation market, it’s understandable why there is a demand for advanced, long-range aircraft,” he commented.
While a specific timeline for the next phase of orders has not been disclosed, this move indicates IndiGo’s ongoing strategies to extend its reach beyond traditional domestic and short-haul international services.
The 60 confirmed Airbus A350-900s are scheduled for delivery starting in mid-2027. These aircraft are capable of flying non-stop for up to 18,000 km, which signifies a new stage for the airline’s international ambitions.
It remains uncertain whether this subsequent order will include the larger A350-1000 variant, known for its increased capacity (up to 410 passengers) and extended range compared to the A350-900.
Currently, Air India (AI) is the only Indian airline with A350-1000s on order, which feature a four-class layout, including a first-class option.
For IndiGo, historically focused on a single-class, low-cost model, the transition to the A350-1000 could suggest operational diversification, especially if it aims to compete with full-service airlines on lucrative long-haul routes.
Historic Aircraft Orders and Fleet Composition
In June 2023, IndiGo placed the world’s largest single aircraft order, acquiring 500 Airbus A320 family jets. This transaction brought its total backlog of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR variants to nearly 1,000 aircraft. Including the A350s, IndiGo now has roughly 1,400 aircraft on order.
To date, the airline has already received over 455 aircraft, underscoring a strategy centered on scale, network expansion, and cost-effectiveness.
Airbus maintains a positive outlook on the Indian market beyond widebody aircraft. Remi Maillard, President of Airbus India & South Asia, emphasized the potential for A220 aircraft to cater to India’s regional routes, offering versatility on low-demand routes, thereby complementing the long-haul capabilities of the A350 family.
Moreover, Airbus plans to enhance its sourcing from India. The European aerospace giant currently collaborates with Indian suppliers for components valued at up to $1.4 billion per year and aims to increase that amount by $600 million “well before the end of this decade,” as stated by Maillard.
Market Dynamics
India’s aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth, driven by a youthful population, an expanding middle class, and strategic geographical positioning.
Situated between Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, India is evolving into a critical hub for global air travel.
As of May 31, Airbus has received 1,391 orders for the A350 family and has delivered 648 units internationally.
The list price for an A350-900 is approximately $308.1 million, while the A350-1000 is valued at about $355.7 million, although finalized pricing often results from confidential negotiations.
