Enhancing Air Travel Access
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s dedication to promoting open skies during the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 81st Annual General Meeting. He emphasized the importance of ensuring air travel is both accessible and affordable to the public. While highlighting India’s vision to develop as a global Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub by 2030, he encouraged the aviation sector to adopt ‘Design in India’ as a key focus. The new Aircraft Act has been aligned with international practices to fortify these efforts.

During his address, Modi reinforced India’s commitment to open skies and global connectivity, encouraging cooperation among stakeholders to foster a secured and inclusive aviation industry. This declaration comes in response to concerns raised by Emirates President Tim Clark regarding India’s limitations on foreign airline operations, suggesting these regulations might hinder the nation’s economic growth.
Clark emphasized the critical role of air connectivity in driving economic success, referring to a longstanding debate over bilateral flight rights between India and the UAE. According to the existing 2014 agreement, both countries can operate a specified number of flights per week, with Emirates already at maximum capacity.
In contrast, Indigo CEO Pieter Elbers has countered Clark’s perspective, asserting a different view on the matter.
Legislative Updates in Indian Aviation
Modi also introduced the recently enacted Protection of Interest in Aircraft Objects Bill, which aligns Indian laws with the Cape Town Convention, facilitating operation for global aircraft leasing companies within India. He stated that the new Aircraft Act fosters a progressive business environment with an emphasis on compliance ease and a simplified tax system, thereby creating significant investment avenues for international aviation enterprises. The expansion of the aviation industry is anticipated to generate numerous jobs and collaborate with new opportunities for various aviation professionals.
The Prime Minister spotlighted the MRO sector as an emerging industry, with plans for India to evolve into a global leader in aircraft maintenance. His vision for a $4 billion MRO hub by 2030 is positioned as a cornerstone of India’s aviation strategy.
Furthermore, Modi encouraged aviation firms to not only prioritize ‘Make in India’ but also innovate with ‘Design in India’, marking India’s ambition to be a central figure in aviation advancements.
