Air India places firm order for another 100 Airbus jets

Air India has placed an order for an additional 100 Airbus jets as part of its ambitious expansion strategy under the ownership of Tata Group.

The announcement made on December 9 includes a firm order for 10 A350s and 90 A320neo-family aircraft. This new order complements the 470 Airbus and Boeing aircraft that Air India had previously committed to last year. Among the earlier orders, 40 were A350s and 210 were A320neo-family jets, along with 190 737 Max jets, 20 787s, and 10 777Xs.

“With India’s passenger growth surpassing global averages, bolstered by improved infrastructure and a dynamic young population eager to travel internationally, we see a strong rationale for Air India to enhance its fleet beyond the 470 aircraft previously ordered,” stated Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chair of Air India and Tata Sons.

“This new order of 100 Airbus aircraft will assist in positioning Air India for accelerated growth and support our objective of transforming Air India into a world-class airline connecting India to destinations around the globe.”

As a result of this latest commitment, Air India has a total of 344 aircraft scheduled to arrive from Airbus, having already welcomed six A350s into its fleet. Additionally, out of the 220 widebody and narrowbody aircraft ordered from Boeing, 185 are yet to be delivered.

The incoming A320neo-family aircraft for Air India will be equipped with CFM International Leap-1A engines.
