A lawsuit has emerged accusing a Southwest Airlines employee of racial discrimination against a Black family traveling through Portland International Airport (PDX) in August of the previous year. According to KATU’s report, the incident allegedly involved the employee humiliating the DeWeese family while they were en route from Portland to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), as one member of the group was checking a firearm.
The father was instructed to return to the ticket counter due to an issue regarding the firearm. Meanwhile, the rest of the DeWeese family proceeded to the boarding gate, where gate agent Melissa Stallcup was reportedly calling out for them. The lawsuit claims that Stallcup loudly declared that none of the family members would be allowed to board because one of the sisters was carrying a gun.
When the sister corrected the gate agent, explaining that their father was at the ticket counter resolving the issue, Stallcup allegedly responded by stating that the father was in police custody. Upon the father’s return to the gate, his daughters were visibly frightened, anxious, and upset due to Stallcup’s treatment.
