Vietnam Airlines Launches First Direct Ho Chi Minh to Copenhagen Flight

HO CHI MINH- Vietnam Airlines (VN) is set to introduce its inaugural direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to Copenhagen (CPH), creating a groundbreaking non-stop route that connects Vietnam with Northern Europe. This new service, commencing on December 15, aims to strengthen travel, trade, and cultural interconnections.

The route will feature the modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and will operate three round trips each week to accommodate the rising interest from tourists, families, and corporate travelers.

Vietnam Airlines’ new route represents a substantial expansion of its international services, establishing the first direct air link between Vietnam and Northern Europe.

Flights will leave Ho Chi Minh City every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while return journeys from Copenhagen will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

According to Đặng Anh Tuấn, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, this new initiative is part of the airline’s wider strategy to enhance global connectivity, catering to Vietnam’s increasing economic and tourism needs.

The route will also serve the Vietnamese community in Denmark, which is estimated to exceed 70,000 individuals.

Copenhagen (CPH) is the largest air hub in Northern Europe and serves as a key base for Scandinavian Airlines (SK), providing quick access to neighboring countries including Sweden, Norway, and Finland, thus making it an advantageous gateway for Vietnam Airlines passengers traveling to the Nordic area.

As reported by Vietnam News, this route is anticipated to enhance bilateral relations, trade, and tourism opportunities between Vietnam and Denmark.

Strategic Expansion

Vietnam Airlines is actively expanding its international operations in response to a surge in post-pandemic travel demand and the recovery of global travel.

The airline has announced plans to reinstate 15 international routes that encompass high-demand locations such as Italy, Russia, China, the UAE, Japan, South Korea, and India.

Currently, Vietnam Airlines provides direct services to various European destinations, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia.

Commencing in July, a new route from Hà Nội (HAN) to Milan (MXP) will operate three times a week, with plans to extend services from Ho Chi Minh City to Milan after 2025.

Additionally, the airline has broadened its services in Southeast Asia, launching a new route from Ho Chi Minh City to Bali (DPS), further enhancing its existing Jakarta (CGK) offerings.

In early June, a direct daily service was rolled out between Nha Trang (CXR) and Busan (PUS) utilizing Airbus A321 aircraft, thereby strengthening its connectivity to South Korea.

Demand and Challenges

Vietnam Airlines is also optimizing its existing routes, including the HCM City–Singapore (SIN) and HCM City–Bangkok (BKK), to accommodate the growing demand for regional travel.

The airline reported a 10% year-on-year increase in air passenger traffic during the first five months of the year, indicating a positive recovery trend in the sector.

However, the airline faces significant challenges, including a shortage of aircraft due to global Pratt & Whitney engine recalls and fluctuating fuel prices stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions, testing its operational resilience.
