The necessity for foldable wingtips on the 777X arises from its extensive wingspan. This exceptional wingtip, crafted from advanced composite materials, represents a significant engineering achievement in the commercial aviation sector. How Does The 777X’s Folding Wing Actually Work?

At the Dubai Airshow in November 2025, a Boeing test pilot detailed to Flightradar24 the operation of the Boeing 777X’s wingtips. From the perspective of the flight crew, the wingtips are included in their pre-departure configuration checks, akin to adjusting the flaps. It is essential for pilots to extend the wingtips, and to facilitate this, the aircraft’s system issues progressively increasing alerts. In a critical situation, the aircraft may instruct the crew to abort the takeoff.

The wingtips can be managed through a specific overhead switch in the cockpit, and when they are extended, a clear visual confirmation indicating ‘extended’ is shown on the aircraft’s systems. Once the wingtips are extended, they are electronically isolated and mechanically secured with a large locking bolt to ensure fail-safe protection, preventing them from being folded during flight. After landing, the wingtips automatically fold at a ground speed of 50 knots, alleviating additional tasks for the flight crew while clearing the runway.

The choice to incorporate folding wingtips on the 777X is linked to the aircraft’s wing design. The 777X features significantly larger wings with a high aspect ratio to support its weight in flight. Additionally, the expansive wings enhance the lift-to-drag ratio, leading to improved fuel efficiency and extended range. Without the folding wingtips, the aircraft’s wingspan would surpass the limitations of many airports’ infrastructure, including parking areas and taxiways. Consequently, Boeing devised an innovative wingtip design to circumvent airport access issues.

The Characteristics Of The 777X

As a revamped version of the standard 777 family, the Boeing 777X closely resembles its predecessor in terms of flight deck and fuselage design. While features differ among the 777 variants, the 777X is expected to provide greater capacity and a longer range. The new Boeing 777X family is currently being developed in two versions: the smaller 777-8, which accommodates 395 seats in a two-class configuration, and the larger 777-9, which can hold 426 seats.

Moreover, Boeing is working on a 777-8 Freighter variant, which will have a revenue payload capacity of 112 tonnes. Reviewing the program’s order backlog, the 777-9 is by far the most favored version of the family, followed at a significant distance by the 777-8F and 777-8. One of the most remarkable features of the 777X is its impressive wingspan of 235 feet, 5 inches (71.75 meters) when extended and 212 feet, 9 inches (64.85 meters) on the ground. This wingspan is consistent across all variants of the 777X family.

Additionally, the 777-8 measures 232 feet, 6 inches (70.86 meters) in length, while the 777-9 is 251 feet, 9 inches (76.72 meters) long. Both variants share a similar height of 64 feet (19 meters). In terms of technical range, the 777-8 can travel distances of up to 8,745 nautical miles (16,190 km), allowing it to compete with Airbus’ A350 family. However, its larger counterpart, the 777-9, has a range of 7,285 nautical miles (13,500 km), which is comparable to the Boeing 747-8. This range is significantly less than that of the Airbus A350-1000, for instance.

While the Boeing 787 family provides airlines with the option to select between two engines, the 777X continues to showcase its innovative design and capabilities.
