Vietnam Airlines Launches First Direct Ho Chi Minh to Copenhagen Flight

HO CHI MINH CITY – Vietnam Airlines (VN) is set to inaugurate its inaugural direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to Copenhagen (CPH), establishing a significant non-stop link between Vietnam and Northern Europe. This new service, commencing on December 15, aims to bolster travel, trade, and cultural connections.

This route will be serviced by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, conducting three round trips weekly to accommodate the increasing demand from tourists, families, and business travelers.

Vietnam Airlines’ new route opens a vital expansion of its international operations, marking the first direct air connection between Vietnam and Northern Europe.

The flights from Ho Chi Minh City will take off every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while the return flights from Copenhagen will be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

According to Đặng Anh Tuấn, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, this move embodies the airline’s overarching strategy to enhance global connectivity and support Vietnam’s escalating economic and tourism needs.

This new route will also serve as a crucial link for the Vietnamese community in Denmark, which is estimated to exceed 70,000 individuals.

Copenhagen (CPH), recognized as Northern Europe’s busiest air hub and a primary base for Scandinavian Airlines (SK), affords seamless access to neighboring countries such as Sweden, Norway, and Finland, establishing itself as a strategic entry point for Vietnam Airlines passengers traveling to the Nordic region.

In reports by Vietnam News, this route is poised to further enhance bilateral relations, trade, and tourism between Vietnam and Denmark.

Strategic Expansion

Vietnam Airlines is committed to expanding its international operations in response to the rising post-pandemic travel demand and the recovery of global air travel.

The airline has announced plans to revive 15 international routes focusing on key destinations such as Italy, Russia, China, the UAE, Japan, South Korea, and India.

Within Europe, Vietnam Airlines already provides direct services to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia.

Beginning in July, the airline will launch a new service from Hà Nội (HAN) to Milan (MXP) with three weekly flights, with intentions to start services from Ho Chi Minh City to Milan after 2025.

In Southeast Asia, the airline has strengthened its operations, introducing a new route from Ho Chi Minh City to Bali (DPS), supplementing its existing Jakarta (CGK) route.

In early June, a new daily non-stop service was launched between Nha Trang (CXR) and Busan (PUS) utilizing Airbus A321 aircraft, enhancing its connectivity to South Korea.

Demand and Challenges

Vietnam Airlines is also optimizing its current routes, including HCM City–Singapore (SIN) and HCM City–Bangkok (BKK), to cater to the rising demand for regional travel.

The airline has reported a 10% year-over-year growth in air passenger traffic during the first five months of the year, indicating a robust recovery in the sector.

Despite the positive trends, the airline faces considerable challenges. A shortage of aircraft due to global Pratt & Whitney engine recalls and fluctuating fuel prices caused by ongoing geopolitical tensions is testing its operational capabilities.
