The 36-year-old man was swiftly apprehended by airport staff and subsequently taken into custody by local law enforcement. According to reports from the Portugal Resident, he was later evaluated at a hospital.
Despite the breach of the airport’s perimeter, flight operations were not significantly affected, and there were no delays for incoming or outgoing flights. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) serves approximately 36 million passengers annually, is the main hub for TAP Air Portugal, and is a focus city for Azores Airlines. It is the busiest airport in the country, surpassing Porto (OPO) and Faro Airport (FAO).
Incident at the Airport Perimeter
The individual climbed over the airport’s perimeter fence on Sunday, August 30, around 8:55 AM, near Runway 2. A report from Aviation Gallery indicates that the crew of a departing TAP Airbus A321 noticed the man and alerted air traffic control. Initial accounts suggest that he was walking calmly, and it is believed he sought a ‘closer look at airplanes.’ A search revealed that he was unarmed.
After the departing flight raised the alarm, airport personnel approached and detained the individual. He was then handed over to the Portugal Public Security Police (PSP). Following identification, he was assessed by INEM, Portugal’s emergency medical service, and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Fortunately, this unusual incident did not lead to any accidents, and flight operations remained largely unaffected. Simple Flying attempted to contact Lisbon Airport for a statement, but an airport spokesperson was not immediately available.
Climbed Over the Fence for a Closer Look at Aircraft
This evident security breach has prompted numerous questions regarding how the individual managed to scale the airport perimeter fence unnoticed and access an active runway with moving aircraft without being detected. After the man was intercepted, the airport initiated a runway inspection to search for any foreign objects or potential hazards, but none were discovered.
The individual can be seen in the video above calmly walking across the airport grounds on the grassy area between the runway and the apron where aircraft are parked. He was dressed in a light-colored shirt tucked into dark dress pants and did not resist when approached by airport officials during his removal or medical assessment.
This case has been referred to the Public Prosecution Service (Ministério Público) of Portugal, sparking discussions about the airport’s perimeter security and the potential need for enhanced intrusion detection measures.

Humberto Delgado Airport is the busiest airport in Portugal, located four miles (seven kilometers) from downtown Lisbon. It does not rank among the top ten busiest airports in Europe. The airport serves as the primary hub for TAP and its subsidiaries, while also being a focus city for Azores Airlines. LIS continues to operate as a base for both easyJet and Ryanair.
